Use this before reserving a unit or extending one more month. The cheapest first-month offer can become expensive once required add-ons, moving costs, and full-rate months are included.

Methodology
The calculator builds the monthly storage bill from unit rent, climate control premium, access or service fees, insurance, and tax on taxable rent/add-ons. Promo discounts are applied only for the number of months entered and never below zero.
Upfront cost includes the first estimated monthly bill, admin/setup fee, lock or access fee, move-in truck or mileage cost, move-in labor, and packing supplies. Total project cost adds all storage months, insurance/add-ons, move-in and move-out costs, upfront facility fees, and expected late fee risk.
The recommendation compares total project cost with your budget and item value, then flags promo expiration, climate control choices, and long storage periods where downsizing or disposing of low-value items may be cheaper.
Important caveats
- Use the facility's written quote as the controlling estimate. This calculator is for planning, not a binding storage contract or insurance recommendation.
- Promo rates, free-month offers, rent increases, taxes, required insurance, locks, admin fees, gate cards, deposits, and access fees vary by facility and market.
- Late fees, lockout rules, lien notices, auction timing, and partial-payment policies are governed by the rental agreement and state law. Avoid treating late fees as a financing option.
- Climate control does not guarantee protection from all moisture, pests, dust, heat, cold, theft, or damage. Check facility conditions and coverage exclusions.
- If you are storing low-value items for many months, compare storage cost with selling, donating, discarding, replacing later, or renting a smaller unit.

Frequently asked questions
What size storage unit should I price?
Price the smallest unit that realistically fits your inventory with safe access. A 5x5 unit fits boxes or closet items, 10x10 can fit many one-bedroom moves, and 10x20 may fit a small household or vehicle, depending on packing.
Should I pay extra for climate control?
Climate control is more useful for wood furniture, paper, photos, electronics, fabrics, art, and humid or extreme-temperature markets. For durable low-value items, the premium may not be worth a long stay.
Why is the first month different from later months?
The first month can include admin fees, locks, moving costs, and promotional discounts. Later months usually reflect the normal rent plus required insurance and add-ons.
Can storage cost more than the items are worth?
Yes. Long storage periods can quietly exceed the value of furniture, clothes, or household goods. Compare the total storage project cost with what you would pay to replace only the items you truly need later.
